Engineers & Brew Solutions Limited MD Reynolds Brew revealed that Ghana is losing up to $170 million annually through gas flaring in the oil and gas sector according to PIAC report in 2024. Speaking at the Oil & Gas Measurement & Metering Summit in Accra, Brew emphasized the critical need for precise emissions monitoring and gas capture technologies.
- Implementing rigorous gas measurement standards
- Regular meter calibration and verification
- Reducing carbon emissions through advanced monitoring techniques
Brew stressed that local engineering firms like his have the technical expertise to address these challenges, calling for increased private sector involvement in developing sustainable energy solutions.
A leading measurement engineer George Nii revealed that Ghana's oil industry could be losing up to $20 million annually due to imprecise metering systems. Speaking at a recent industry conference, the expert highlighted that even a modest 1% error in measurement for a 100,000-barrel-per-day oil field represents significant financial losses.
The engineer George emphasized the critical need for modern metering technologies like ultrasonic and Coriolis meters, and recommended implementing "check metering" systems where multiple meters cross-verify measurements. He called for closer collaboration between regulatory bodies including the Ghana Standards Authority, National Petroleum Authority, and Petroleum Commission to ensure transparency and accuracy in oil production reporting.
- Regular validation and calibration of existing metering systems
- Rapid response to system error alerts
- Installation of advanced, precise measurement technologies
- Establishing robust oversight mechanisms
The revelations underscore the importance of precise measurement in Ghana's oil and gas sector, where even small errors can translate into millions of dollars in potential revenue loss.
