In a powerful event in Accra, leading African intellectuals have launched the fifth annual Africa Wiki Challenge (AWC), championing the preservation and celebration of African narratives.
Dr. Chika C Mba, a senior research fellow, emphasized the critical importance of Africans documenting their own history and traditions.
The initiative encourages Africans and people of African descent to create and enhance Wikipedia content, focusing this year on the theme "Reclaiming Our Narrative: Justice for Africans and the Diaspora through Reparations."
Speakers like Dr. Toni Luck passionately urged participants to collect stories from elders, preserving generational knowledge that predates colonial influences. The challenge aims to increase African representation online and empower communities to tell their own stories authentically.
By providing a platform for African voices, the AWC is not just a writing contest, but a movement towards cultural preservation, self-representation, and historical justice.
The competition is open to Africans and people of African descent. Participants of AWC are encouraged to create new articles or enhance existing African content online, centering on the theme.
The articles should therefore be related to justice, reparations, and historical redress for Africa and the diaspora. Images and media can also be uploaded to Wikipedia Commons to enhance African content.
