The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) launched its annual Safety Week Celebration in Accra, bringing together industry leaders, regulators, and safety professionals to reinforce safety standards in Ghana's downstream petroleum sector.

Dr. Riverson Oppong, COMAC CEO, delivered a powerful opening address highlighting the critical importance of safety in the downstream petroleum industry. He noted that the sector contributes approximately 9% to Ghana's national GDP and provides  direct and indirect jobs.

The event, featuring top regulators and industry leaders, focuses on proactive safety strategies, including enhanced hazard identification, smart monitoring technologies, and emergency preparedness. Dr. Oppong stressed that safety is not just a departmental responsibility but a strategic imperative that must be embraced at every organizational level.

"Safety is not an added value, it is the foundation upon which we build our assets and businesses," Dr. Oppong emphasized, calling on participants to become safety champions.

The week-long event aims to strengthen safety protocols, improve operational efficiency, and build public trust in the downstream petroleum sector.

Key participants include representatives from the National Petroleum Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, and various oil marketing companies.

Board Chairman Gabriel Kumi highlighted the event's significance, describing it as a critical platform for embedding a "culture of safety that is uncompromising, proactive, and people-centered."

"Every voice matters, every insight counts," Kumi stated, underlining the collaborative approach to safety innovation and environmental stewardship.

The event continues with workshops and discussions focused on advancing safety protocols in the petroleum sector.
