Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has launched the Aviation Security Culture Week, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to ensure safe and secure air travel.

In his keynote address, Nikpe highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating that aviation security and safety are critical elements of the transport industry. He noted that the launch marks a milestone in Ghana's aviation industry, aimed at promoting a strong and dynamic security culture.

"Aviation security is a shared responsibility," Nikpe said, citing the event's slogan, "See it, Say it, Secure it." He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to work together to create a safe and secure environment for travelers.

The Minister recalled the 2019 declaration by the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) as the Year of Security Culture and emphasized Ghana's commitment to implementing security measures.

He highlighted the government's implementation of advanced passenger information and passenger name record systems to enhance security.

Nikpe commended the Ghana Airport Company Limited for organizing the event, stating that it is a crucial step towards promoting a strong security culture in the aviation industry.

Security Culture: A Key to Aviation Safety

Security culture refers to the shared values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that shape how individuals approach security in their daily work. In the airport environment, security culture is not merely a regulatory requirement, but a mindset that must be consistently demonstrated by all stakeholders and operators.

A strong security culture enables the prevention of incidents, early detection of threats, and continuous protection of passengers, staff, and infrastructure. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recognizes that effective security depends as much on people as it does on systems.

Importance of Security Culture

Equips staff with necessary knowledge, skills, and capabilities.

Reduces unintentional security lapses or breaches.

Promotes compliance with aviation security requirements.

- Enhances reporting of suspicious incidents or activities

Mitigates insider threats and cyber security threats.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) are working together to ensure the primary objective of aviation security is achieved, prioritizing the safety of passengers, crew, and the general public.
