BREAKING: TEWU Legon chapter Declares Nationwide Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Service Conditions

Story, by Paul Mensah Nsor

The Teachers and Educational Workers' Union (TEWU) of TUC has officially launched an indefinite nationwide strike, affecting non-teaching staff across multiple educational and cultural institutions in Ghana. The strike, declared on September 19, 2025, impacts employees of the Ghana Education Service, Public and Technical Universities, Ghana Library Authority, and Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.

Union leadership, led by National Chairperson Ramatu Braimah, held a press conference detailing years of persistent negotiations and unfulfilled promises from successive governments. The union emphasized their political neutrality and stressed that the strike is a result of long-standing labor disputes, not political maneuvering.

Key grievances include:

Unrenewed conditions of service since 2008.

Repeated delays in negotiation processes.

Lack of meaningful engagement from government agencies.

Persistent neglect of non-teaching staff contributions.

The union has meticulously documented their attempts to resolve issues, including multiple interactions with the National Labor Commission and Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. They claim to have followed all legal procedures and consider this the first fully legal strike in Ghana.

TEWU leadership stated they will only suspend the strike once:

Fair Wages receives a proper mandate from the Ministry of Finance

All conditions of service are finalized and signed

Union members have been instructed to stay home until further notice, highlighting the critical importance of their service conditions in their professional operations.

The government has yet to provide a comprehensive response to the union's demands.
