Police Breaks Major Highway Robbery Case, Arrests Suspects and Recovers Stolen Items

Accra, Ghana -  The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has announced the arrest of multiple suspects linked to a high-profile highway robbery that targeted a Council of State member. The robbery occurred on July 21, 2025, along the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway, resulting in the theft of personal items including mobile phones, cash, and a laptop.

Through intelligence-led operations, According to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Lydia Yaako Donkor, the police recovered stolen property and weapons, leading to arrests across the Savannah and Northern regions. Suspects arrested include Washida Yusif, Aaron Abana Basrifanga, Wilson Aba, Muntaro Idrisu (aka) "Virgin"), Aminu Zebilah (aka "Bedman"), Sumaila (aka "Agenda"), and Haruna Safiano.

Recovered items include a locally manufactured shotgun and pistol, ammunition, a sword, masks, and numerous electronic items. The CID says the suspects operated in a coordinated fashion, moving stolen goods through local markets and repair shops.

Aminu Zebilah's criminal record includes a prior conviction for robbery in 2012. Police investigators say this history, along with physical evidence, helped build the case.

The Ghana Police Service has issued a public safety advisory, urging vigilance, especially among motorists and vehicle sellers. Authorities commend officers involved in the operation and the public for their cooperation.

Investigations are ongoing to locate remaining suspects and recover outstanding weapons. The CID promises periodic updates as the case advances.

The CID also reported arrests connected to a robbery in Nkasein, Police has arrested six suspects in connection with a violent robbery that rocked Nkeseim on December 2, 2025, but investigators say a manhunt continues for the gang leader and several other suspects believed to be in possession of stolen firearms.

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Lydia Yaako Donkor, on Thursday outlined a string of arrests stemming from the coordinated attack that targeted multiple sites along the Goaso–Tepa road. According to Donkor, assailants blocked the road and simultaneously attacked NKeseim Police Station, Gold Buying Company and the  Rural Bank area in Nkeseim. During the raid, the attackers made off with two AK-47 service rifles and other valuables.

Arrests and admissions
Following sustained intelligence gathering and forensic investigations, anti-armed robbery units arrested a commercial tricycle rider identified as Kofi (aka“Kofi 835”) on January 16, 2026, at a location near Nkeseim. Kofi admitted involvement in the robbery, CID said. 

Donkor named Muta Akufi (also rendered Muta Moefi in statements) as the suspected gang leader and said he is believed to be in possession of the stolen weapons. Two other suspects identified as Danda and Muhammad Ali remain at large.

Ongoing investigations and appeals
Police say efforts have been intensified to locate and apprehend the fugitive leader and recover the stolen firearms. Investigations are continuing with forensic follow-up and intelligence work to bring additional suspects to justice.

 The CID urged members of the public to remain vigilant. Advice issued included taking precautions against cybercrime and online fraud, avoiding sharing personal or financial details with unknown individuals, and exercising extreme caution when dealing with prospective vehicle buyers or when driving at night or in isolated areas. Motorists were specifically warned against stopping for staged distress signals or picking up unknown passengers.

On behalf of the Inspector General of Police, Donkor commended officers for their dedication and professionalism and expressed gratitude to members of the public and media partners whose timely information and cooperation assisted the investigations.

The CID is urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of Muta Akufi (Moefi), Danda, Muhammad Ali, or the missing firearms to report immediately to the nearest police station.
