Universal Friendship Organisation Commends President Mahama for Granting Amnesty to 998 Inmates

The Universal Friendship Organisation has issued a press statement commending President John Dramani Mahama for granting amnesty to 998 prisoners across Ghana. This gesture demonstrates the government's commitment to rehabilitation, mercy, and the well-being of its citizens.

Positive Impact on the Prison System

The amnesty is expected to have a positive impact on the prison system, including:

Decongesting Prisons, Reducing the number of inmates in prisons will improve living conditions for remaining prisoners.

Reducing Government Expenditure, The government will allocate resources more effectively, reducing expenditure on prisoners.

Rehabilitation and Reintegration, Released prisoners will have the opportunity to reintegrate into society, contributing positively to their communities.

Beneficiaries of the Amnesty

The beneficiaries include:

First-time Offenders, 787 individuals will be pardoned, offering them a chance at societal reintegration.

Prisoners on Death Row, 87 death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment.

Life Sentence Reduction, 51 life sentences will be reduced to 20 years definite terms.

Seriously Ill Inmates, 33 prisoners will be released due to serious health conditions.

Prisoners Above 70 Years, 36 inmates aged over 70 will be granted amnesty, regardless of their offenses.

Nursing Mothers and Petitioners, 2 nursing mothers and 2 petitioners will also benefit from the amnesty.

The Universal Friendship Organisation urges family and friends to welcome these individuals with open arms, provide necessary support, and work towards eliminating stigmatization against them. By doing so, Ghana can create a more inclusive and compassionate society that values redemption and second chances.

The organisation also commends President Mahama's leadership and vision in promoting a more humane and just society. This initiative reflects the government's dedication to creating a better future for all citizens. The government is urged to continue exploring innovative solutions to address prison system challenges and prioritize rehabilitation and reintegration programs for released prisoners.
