The National Youth Authority (NYA) is pushing for comprehensive strategies to address youth unemployment and skills gaps in the country. Edmund Ofosu-Yeboah, Programme Officer for Business Development and Partnerships, highlighted critical challenges facing young people and outlined several government initiatives designed to support youth development.
Speaking candidly, Ofosu-Yeboah noted a significant disconnect between academic training and industry requirements. He emphasized that many educational programs focus on theoretical knowledge without providing practical skills needed in the job market.
To combat this issue, the NYA is promoting multiple programs, including:
- 1 Million Coders Training
- National Apprenticeship Program
- Bucha Project
- Edume RA innovation support initiative
The National Apprenticeship Program stands out, offering youth opportunities to learn skills across various sectors, from digital technologies to fashion. Participants can easily apply through local district assemblies.
Ofosu-Yeboah strongly recommended that young people supplement their education by seeking internships and volunteer experiences to enhance their employability and practical understanding of their chosen fields.
These initiatives represent a comprehensive approach to addressing youth unemployment and preparing the next generation for successful careers.
