Ghana Takes Control of Damang Gold Mine, Rejects Gold Fields' Lease Renewal

Story by Nsor Paul Mensah

The Government of Ghana has assumed operational control of the Damang Mine after rejecting Abosso Gold Fields Limited's (AGL) application for lease renewal. Effective April 19, 2025, the state will take over the mine following its 30-year lease expiration.

Key reasons for the rejection include:

- Failure to declare verifiable mineral reserves

- Lack of a comprehensive technical program

- No budgetary allocation for exploration in the past two years

The government emphasized its commitment to:

- Maintaining uninterrupted operations

- Protecting existing jobs

- Prioritizing local employment and enterprises

- Ensuring transparency during the transition

Minister of Lands & Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, stated that this move aligns with Ghana's policy of reassessing mining licenses to maximize national benefits.

The transition team will engage with workers, contractors, and community leaders to ensure a smooth handover. The government assures international partners that Ghana remains committed to a stable and responsible investment environment.
