The acting Director General of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMO), Eric Asumah has appealed to Ghanaians to have faith in the Ghana Meteorological Agency and take climatic information seriously.
He stated this during the opening of the National Stakeholders Workshop which was held in Accra, to develop regional strategy for flood and drought risk management in the Volta River Basin.
According to him, this workshop is organized by the World Meteorological Organization, in partnership with other stakeholders to spread awareness on how to prevent flood and drought with regards to the Volta River Basin which flows through six countries namely Ghana, Togo, Cote D’Ivoire, Benin, Burkina Faso, etc. and also to protect people who live in areas that are prone to flood and drought.
He added that this workshop seeks to look at the strategies through which flood and drought can be prevented and also give early warnings and information to people on how to carry themselves during these conditions.
Eric Asumah therefore appealed that Ghanaians should stop the behavior of neglecting and not heeding to the warnings of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMO) because the agency is the one capable of giving them information on climatic change.
In relation to developing strategies to protect people living in water and drought prone areas, the acting Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission (WRO), Dorcas Adwoa Painstil also urged Ghanaians to be very careful and do thorough research on lands they want to buy so as to know the conditions surrounding the lands.
According to her, having adequate information on lands will save the buyer from harsh conditions such as flood and drought since all water bodies especially rivers will definitely go over its banks.
She therefore advised Ghanaians to stop weeding around water bodies and be very careful by heeding to the warnings from the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMO) regarding the land they want to purchase and heed to the advice of the agency.
