Under the distinguished patronage of His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Ga Mantse and President of the Ghana Traditional Council, the inaugural Ga Mantse Tennis Open Championship was officially launched in Accra, with a call to use sports as a tool for youth development, discipline and national progress.
Speaking on behalf of the Ga Mantse at the launch, a representative conveyed the King’s message that the tournament represents “more than the launch of a sporting event. It is to launch a vision and the beginning of a great movement.”
"It is a declaration that the future of Ghana will be built by healthy, disciplined, educated citizens, both young and old," the message read. "Sports has the unique power of transforming lives and bringing people of all backgrounds together. It teaches discipline before success, humility in victory, and dignity in defeat."
His Royal Majesty emphasized the central role of young people in national development, with special attention to the girl child.
"The greatest resource of any nation is its young people. Every child carries untapped potential. Every young person deserves the opportunity to discover his or her gifts," the King stated.
"The girl child is my heartbeat," he added. "The education, protection, and empowerment of the girl child remain one of my greatest passions. When we empower a girl, we strengthen the community. When we give a girl confidence, opportunity, and hope, we help shape the future of our nation and break generational cycles of poverty."
The Ga Mantse expressed his vision for the tournament to become "an annual celebration of excellence and a platform for discovering future champions from every region of Ghana and across Africa."
"True champions are remembered not only for the matches they win, but for the lives they inspire and touch," the message concluded before the King officially declared the *King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II Tennis Open* duly launched.
Madam Gina Ella Nettey, CEO of Gennet Services and lead organizer, said the championship was designed as a movement to change lives through sport.
"Today we launch a movement, a movement that believes sports can change lives, build character, unite communities, and create opportunities for our youth," she said.
She thanked the Ga Mantse for his vision, noting that "traditional leadership is not only about preserving our great and rich heritage, but also about creating opportunities for our young people to strive."
The tournament aims to identify talent, provide coaching, build discipline and confidence, and create scholarship opportunities. Organizers also plan to establish community tennis courts and strengthen school tennis programs.
Schools in attendance included Labone SHS, Accra Wesley Girls SHS, St. Mary’s SHS, Accra Girls SHS, and others from within the Ga State.
Madam Nettey acknowledged partners including Blue Skies, Piva, Ansa Law Firm, and City Makers for supporting the initiative.
Ghana Tennis Federation Pledges Technical Support
President of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Mr. Aboagye Duah, described the launch as a landmark event for Ghana’s sporting calendar and one that was "long overdue" for the Ga State.
"Ga Mashie occupies a special place in Ghana tennis. Some of our country's greatest players were nurtured here. Our celebrated tennis icon, Frank Ofori, perfected his craft just a few hundred meters away from this palace," he noted.
Mr. Duah announced that the Federation will serve as technical partner for the tournament. He added that the week-long event will feature Ghana’s top male and female professionals competing for honors, prize money and ranking points.
In a show of inclusivity, the finale will feature a match between two of Ghana’s top wheelchair tennis players. A celebrity challenge match will also feature personalities including football legend Stephen Appiah, and coach George Boateng.
"At the Ghana Tennis Federation, inclusion is not merely a slogan; it is a commitment," Mr. Duah said. "Tennis belongs to everyone. Ability, not disability, defines champions."
The Ga Mantse Tennis Open is expected to become an annual fixture aimed at promoting tennis excellence, celebrating Ga heritage, empowering youth and strengthening communities.
