Accra, Ghana - St. Michael's Specialist Hospital in Lapaz has launched the "Sarpong Dialysis Unit" and Eye Clinic to address the growing challenge of kidney disease in the country. The unit's inauguration marks a significant milestone in the hospital's efforts to improve access to life-saving treatment for patients with kidney disease.
Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, Board member of St. Michael's Specialist Hospital, emphasized that kidney disease remains a serious public health concern, with dialysis being a matter of life and death for many patients. "The availability of basic dialysis machines will significantly improve access to life-saving treatment, reduce the burden on patients and their families, and enhance the hospital's capacity to serve the community," Dr. Sarpong said.
The launch of the Sarpong Dialysis Unit is a result of collaboration and dedication, according to Dr. Sarpong, who commended the board members for their efforts. "As we celebrate this milestone, let us be reminded that healthcare is a continual process. We remain committed to investing in modern equipment, specialist services, and human capacity development to meet the evolving health needs of our people."
The hospital's CEO, Michael Banahene, expressed gratitude to the management and board members for their efforts in advancing the hospital's mission.
The Sarpong Dialysis Unit is expected to provide critical care to patients with kidney disease, improving treatment outcomes and reducing the financial burden on families. In his address, Christian Tetteh Badger, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Okaikwei North, highlighted the significance of the dialysis unit, stating it marks a milestone in expanding access to specialized medical services. He emphasized the Municipal Assembly's role in shaping the health landscape, advocating for inclusive healthcare reforms, and addressing the evolving health needs of the population.
Badger noted the government's initiative, the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund (Mama Cares), which supports chronic non-communicable diseases, reducing treatment costs. The Assembly will facilitate resource transfer for health infrastructure, human resources, and medical supplies, prioritizing preventive healthcare.
The launch of the dialysis unit is a beginning of a new era in healthcare delivery, Badger said, urging collaboration to build a resilient, responsive, and people-centered health system. The Municipal Directorate will intensify health education programs, promote preventive care, and address cultural and social barriers to healthcare access.
The Assembly will partner with NGOs, the private sector, and international partners to expand healthcare opportunities, fostering intersectoral collaboration and strengthening coordination with national health authorities.
Badger emphasized the importance of localized, inclusive, and accountable health systems, expressing confidence that St. Michael's Specialist Hospital will transform healthcare delivery in Okaikwei North.
