ACCRA, Dec. 4 -- Ghana's senior national rugby union men's 15s team, the Eagles, registered their second win in the newly established international friendly test series “the Heritage Cup”. The Eagles scored higher over the Les Éléphants of Cote d’ Ivoire in an action packaged contest at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Legon, Accra. The Eagles won 17-08.
Left Wing of the Eagles, Nhyira Owusu-Ansah made the first try sparking excitement among the home fans. Scrum Half of the Eagles, Richard Kossivi Botchi missed the conversion. The Eagles continued to dictate the pace of the game. Nhyira Owusu-Ansah again registered his second try for the Eagles. The subsequent conversion was missed with the score at 10-0. The Elephant did not give up as they pushed for a try. They scored from a Penalty Kick to keep the score board reading 10-3 at 26 minutes. Ghana’s Tight Head Prop, Percy Adamson weaved his way through the defense of the Elephants to make a try. Scrum Half of the Eagles, Richard Kossivi Botchi this time successfully made conversion to peg the score at 17-3.
After recess, the Ivorian’s looked rejuvenated. They piled pressure and their efforts paid off. Their Scrum Half Coulybaly Dustiane finally broke through the steel defense of the Eagles to make a try. They however missed the conversion keeping the score board reading at 17-8. The rains then set in making play difficult. The Ivorian’s pushed but for a try but a tactically disciplined Eagles made sure they score stayed intact. The encounter ended 17-08 in favour of Ghana.
The Heritage Cup competition, a specially designed competition for West African rugby Union teams is aimed at giving teams much playing time to test their battle readiness. Ghana first played Nigeria on the opening day and won by 38-11.
