ACCRA, Ghana - The Environmental Protection Authority of Ghana officially launched the Ghana Green Cooling Project, a pioneering initiative designed to revolutionize the country's air conditioning sector while addressing critical environmental challenges.

The project, a collaborative effort between GIZ Ghana and the EPA with funding from the Swiss Klik Foundation, operates under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement framework. It represents a significant partnership between Ghana and Switzerland in tackling ozone layer depletion and climate change in the cooling industry.

Mr. Felix Addo-Okyireh, Director and Head of Climate Change and Ozone Department at EPA Ghana, during the launch event. "This project is not merely about introducing new technology; it is about fostering holistic change."

The initiative focuses on promoting highly energy-efficient, climate-friendly split air conditioning units that utilize ultra-low global warming potential refrigerants such as propane. Given Ghana's climate necessities for cooling, the project addresses the urgent need for environmentally responsible solutions.

Key components of the project include:

- Financial incentives to make green AC units more accessible to consumers

- Comprehensive capacity-building programs for technicians

- Establishment of proper end-of-life management systems for old AC units

- Training for safe and efficient installation and maintenance

The air conditioning sector currently plays a significant role in Ghana's energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The Green Cooling Project aims to dramatically reduce these emissions while enhancing energy efficiency and contributing to Ghana's national climate goals.

"Our collective aim is to significantly reduce emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and contribute to Ghana's climate goals," Addo-Okyrieh emphasized. "It is an investment in a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Ghana."

The project is expected to create lasting positive impacts on Ghana's environment, economy, and citizen welfare, marking the beginning of what organizers describe as a "transformative journey towards green cooling."
