The President of the Ghana Bar Association, Efua Ghartey, has emphasized the need for continuous innovation and investment in legal education to ensure excellence in the profession.

Speaking at the 50th Law Week Celebration launch of the University of Ghana Law School, Ghartey highlighted the importance of embracing new areas of law, such as air law, entertainment law, and FinTech law, to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world.

Key Areas for Improvement

Instilling Ethical Contacts: Ghartey stressed the importance of instilling ethical values in law students, citing Proverbs 4:7, which says, "Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do."

Establishment of an Educational Fund: She suggested establishing an educational fund to support law students, which could be replenished by recipients after they start working.

Exchange Programs: Ghartey announced plans to establish exchange programs with other bars, including the Law Society of England and Wales, to benefit students and lawyers.

Legal Literature: She encouraged law students and professionals to express themselves in writing, highlighting the need for more Ghanaian law books and literature.

Pursuit of Excellence: Ghartey emphasized the importance of striving for excellence in the legal profession, citing Daniel 6:3, which says, "Daniel distinguished himself...because an excellent spirit was with him."

Efua Ghartey praised the University of Ghana Law School for its contributions to the legal profession, noting that the faculty has been a "pace-setter in many unique ways." She also commended the Ghana School of Law for its growth and commitment to maintaining standards despite its growing intake.

The Ghana Bar Association president's call for innovation and excellence in legal education comes at a time when the legal profession is evolving rapidly, with new areas of law emerging and technology playing an increasingly important role. Her remarks are likely to resonate with law students, professionals, and educators in Ghana and beyond.
