Former Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye has urged the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to intensify its public education mandate on Ghana's constitutional framework and important matters of state to deepen citizens' understanding of governance and democracy.
The call was made during a civic engagement forum on constitutional amendment where he stressed that many Ghanaians lack adequate knowledge of the 1992 Constitution, their rights and responsibilities, and the workings of state institutions.
According to him, the NCCE, as the body mandated to educate the public on the Constitution, must be more proactive and visible in its outreach, especially at the grassroots level.
Prof. Oquaye noted that civic apathy, misinformation, and low participation in governance processes are partly due to inadequate constitutional education.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director for Smart Generation Governance Hub, Rev. D.K. Odei Appiah, reiterated the need for Ghanaians to know more about the ongoing constitutional reforms.
According to him, the 1992 Constitution remains the fundamental law of Ghanaian democracy and therefore the NCCE needs to engage citizens more on the new additions being proposed by the Constitutional Review Committee to assess whether they are fit for purpose.
