Story by Paul Mensah Nsor
In a powerful display of leadership and conviction, Andrews Kwame Perprem launched Save the Mining Communities–Ghana (SMC-Gh) just 24 hours after losing his father. The NGO is dedicated to defending mining communities, protecting vulnerable children, promoting safer livelihoods, and advocating sustainable environmental practices in areas ravaged by illegal mining.
Perprem's speech at the launch was a poignant reflection of his own childhood struggles in Agyapomaa, near Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Municipality. He spoke of going to school on an empty stomach, collecting plantain scraps to eat, and walking into the forest to search for wild kola nuts to sell. His story is a testament to the brutal reality of childhood poverty in Ghana's mining communities.
SMC-Gh aims to address the pressing issues faced by these communities, including:
Child Exploitation, Protecting children from exploitation in illegal mining zones
Sustainable Mining, Advocating responsible mining practices
Alternative Livelihoods,Promoting alternative livelihoods for families trapped in destructive extraction
Environmental Restoration, Restoring dignity to communities and promoting environmental sustainability
Perprem's leadership is a beacon of hope for Ghana's forgotten mining communities. His story is a reminder that leadership is not just about power, but about service and sacrifice. As he said, "Leadership is not always convenient. Service is not always comfortable. But when the cause is greater than self, you rise, even when your heart is heavy."
The launch of SMC-Gh is a call to action for Ghanaians to demand accountability in the governance of the country's natural resources. It's a reminder that development cannot be measured by extraction alone, but by the transformation of lives, systems, and futures.
