Accra, Ghana - The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana has announced a groundbreaking new vehicle registration system aimed at enhancing public safety, security, and administrative efficiency. The new system, which was unveiled at a comprehensive stakeholder meeting, features advanced number plate technology and a modernized registration process.

Advanced Number Plate Technology

The new number plates will feature RFID technology for enhanced tracking, registration region mapping, the Ghana flag, unique identification codes, and different background colors for various vehicle categories. Private vehicles will have white number plates, while foreign vehicles will have yellow number plates.

The new registration process will include online registration requests, an appointment-based system, mandatory vehicle onboarding, electronic file conversion, and six-month temporary plates for unregistered vehicles. These changes are designed to streamline the registration process and reduce wait times for vehicle owners.

The DVLA's primary goals for the new system include better vehicle owner identification, enhanced crime prevention, improved road enforcement, and alignment with regional best practices. The new system is expected to reduce the incidence of vehicle-related crimes and improve the overall safety and security of Ghana's roads.

CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey emphasized the collaborative nature of the project, stating, "This is our country, and this is Ghana. Ghana's time once again for greatness. We must make input. Every Ghanaian who has critical skills must be allowed to speak." The draft legislation has already been presented to the government and is currently under parliamentary review. DVLA is conducting extensive stakeholder consultations to ensure broad support and understanding of the new system.

Vehicle owners are advised to onboard their vehicles at DVLA centers before April to streamline the re-registration process. The new system is expected to be fully implemented in the coming months, and vehicle owners are encouraged to take advantage of the onboarding process to avoid any disruptions.

The new vehicle registration system represents a significant step towards modernizing Ghana's vehicle registration infrastructure. The system promises increased transparency, security, and efficiency, and is expected to have a positive impact on public safety and security.

By working together, the DVLA and stakeholders can ensure a smooth transition to the new system and a more efficient and effective vehicle registration process for all Ghanaians.
