The Ghana Hotels Association has initiated a groundbreaking program to recognize and appreciate housekeepers, highlighting their critical role in the hospitality industry. Dr. Edward Ackah-Nyamike Jr., President of the association, emphasized the importance of housekeepers as the "heartbeat of the industry" during the International Housekeepers Week event at Lancaster Hotel Accra.
The Association is addressing long-standing concerns about worker recognition and remuneration. Dr. Ackah-Nyamike Jr. noted that housekeepers often feel underappreciated and taken for granted, prompting the association to engage with hotel owners and directors to improve working conditions.
The Housekeeping Week aims to shine a spotlight on these critical hospitality workers, urging hotels to organize events and provide tokens of appreciation for their housekeeping staff.
Clare Banoeng Yakobu, Greater Accra branch chairperson, emphasized the critical role of housekeepers in maintaining hotel environments, noting that while they work behind the scenes, their efforts are crucial to guest experiences.
The initiative, developed in collaboration with Orange Plus Media, encourages individual hotels to acknowledge their housekeeping teams through small gestures of appreciation and recognition.
Yakobu stressed that housekeepers are typically invisible workers who are essential to creating a clean and welcoming atmosphere.
The launch comes amid challenging economic conditions for the hospitality industry. Association leaders acknowledged the difficult third quarter, expressing hope for improved business conditions under the current government. Despite economic pressures, the association remains committed to supporting and celebrating its workforce.
As part of their 50th-anniversary celebrations in 2025, the association plans a year-long series of events, including a symposium in the Central Region and honorary awards in January. The theme will focus on the association's 50 years of advocacy and impact on Ghana's tourism and hospitality sector.
