The UN Global Compact has released a report calling for a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, citing the devastating impact of fossil fuels on the environment and the benefits of clean energy. Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Mbiah, Country Lead for UN Global Compact Ocean Centre, emphasized the need for a transition to renewable energy, highlighting the critical role that governments, businesses, and individuals must play in driving this chang.
fossil fuels on the environment, including the generation of carbon dioxide and other pollutants that contribute to climate change. Dr. Mbiah noted that the use of fossil fuels is no longer sustainable and that a shift to renewable energy is necessary to mitigate the worst effects of climate change.
The report also highlights the benefits of renewable energy, including the creation of decent jobs, improvement of public health, and advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals. According to the report, solar energy is now 41% cheaper than fossil fuels, and offshore wind is 53% cheaper. The report notes that over 90% of new renewables worldwide produce electricity for less than fossil fuels.
The UN Global Compact is calling on governments, businesses, and individuals to take action to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. The report outlines several key recommendations, including:
Aligning infrastructure, Governments should align their infrastructure with the goals of the Paris Agreement and invest in renewable energy.
Meeting new electricity demand with renewables, Governments should meet new electricity demand with renewables, especially for rapidly growing sectors like big tech and data centers.
Putting people at the heart of the transition, Governments should prioritize the needs of people and communities in the transition to renewable energy.
Increasing cooperation, Governments should increase cooperation on trade and investment to drive the transition to renewable energy.
ismantling structural barriers, Governments should dismantle structural barriers to mobilize energy transition finance to developing countries.
The UN Global Compact's report highlights the urgent need for a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. With the benefits of renewable energy clear, it is time for governments, businesses, and individuals to take action to drive this transition and create a more sustainable future.
