GJA Gives Police 7-Day Ultimatum Over Attacks on Journalists

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service, demanding immediate action to address the rising trend of attacks against journalists in the country.

The association has documented 12 attacks on journalists this year, a number that matches the annual average with months still remaining.

The GJA highlighted several concerning incidents, including the assault of Multimedia Group reporter Samuel Nartey during parliamentary elections and a recent radio attack by a senior police officer.

The association is calling for a comprehensive investigation into these attacks and has specified four demands:

1. A detailed update on investigations into journalist attacks

2. Public reports on prosecutions

3. Clear disciplinary actions against perpetrators

4. Specific measures to prevent future attacks

Failure to meet these demands within the 7-day timeframe will result in media houses boycotting all police-related activities.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour emphasized that attacks on journalists undermine democratic governance and the public's right to information.

The ultimatum has sent a strong message to the police, and it remains to be seen how they will respond to the GJA's demands. The press conference highlights growing concerns about press freedom and journalist safety in Ghana.
