In a recent press release, the Justice Must Prevail Foundation, a human rights advocate group for men, has proposed the appointment of a male Minister for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. This call is motivated by the foundation's observation that since the ministry's creation, no man has ever been appointed as Minister.
The foundation argues that the lack of male representation in the ministry has resulted in an imbalance in addressing domestic violence cases, with most cases being ruled in favor of women due to their perceived vulnerability. This, despite research conducted by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in collaboration with the UK Government, which found that a substantial number of men also suffer domestic violence in Ghana.
The research revealed that 20% of men experience domestic violence, compared to 28% of women, a difference of only 8%. However, despite these findings, no steps have been taken by the ministry or the Government of Ghana to protect men and non-biological children against abuse.
The Justice Must Prevail Foundation is advocating for the appointment of a male Minister to bring about gender balance in the ministry and address the concerns of men. The foundation also suggests the creation of a Male Affairs Department within the ministry, headed by a man, to handle issues related to men.
The foundation's proposal is aimed at promoting fairness and balance in handling domestic violence cases and addressing the needs of all individuals, regardless of gender.
