Ghana Police Announce Tight Security Measures for Presidential Inauguration

Accra, Ghana - The Ghana Police Service has put in place comprehensive security measures for the swearing-in of President-elect John Dramani Mahama and Vice President-elect Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang on January 7, 2025.

According to ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Head of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, several key areas in Accra will be subject to road closures, traffic diversions, and other restrictions during the inauguration ceremony.

The security operational perimeter includes locations around the AU Roundabout, State House, Independence Square, and various traffic lights. Roads within this perimeter will be closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic from 6 AM to 6 PM on the day of the event.

Motorists have been advised to take note of the following traffic diversions:

- Traffic from the 28th February Road will be diverted onto Southern Avenue and Castle traffic light to link up with Oxford Street.

- Traffic from High Street towards Independence Square will be diverted to the Liberia Road at the Customs Headquarters traffic light intersection.

- Motorists from local streets towards Castle Road should move to Oxford Street.

- Traffic from AU Roundabout towards Castle Road through the Osu cemetery traffic light will be diverted to link with the road in front of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony, with parking spaces available at the forecourt of the State House, childrens park and the premises of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Residents, dignitaries, motorists, pedestrians, and the general public within the security operational perimeter are advised to use alternative routes and follow traffic directives from the police.

Separate security arrangements are also in place for the swearing-in of members of parliament and the speaker of parliament at the Parliament House on the same day.
