Accra, Ghana - In a bid to ensure the safety and security of the upcoming general elections, the Ghana Police Service has put in place detailed traffic management and security arrangements for the final rallies of the two major political parties - the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, led a team from the police management board in conducting site inspections at the rally locations - the University of Ghana Sports Park for the NPP and the Zurak Park in Madina for the NDC.
After the inspections and consultations with party representatives, the police outlined a comprehensive plan to facilitate smooth access and movement for supporters attending the rallies scheduled for tomorrow.
Key elements of the security arrangements include:
- Designated traffic diversions and roadblocks to direct supporters from both parties to the respective rally venues without congestion. NPP supporters from Adenta and Dome will be routed through alternative roads to access the University of Ghana campus, while NDC supporters from Tetegu and Dome will be diverted to reach the Madina venue.
- Deployment of police officers at various points along the affected areas to guide and assist the public, ensuring minimal inconvenience.
- Establishment of a roadblock in front of the NDC rally location in Madina to prevent traffic buildup and allow free movement of supporters.
According Grace Ansah Akrofi, public Affairs Director Ghana Police service, said the NPP and NDC leaders expressed their satisfaction with the security measures put in place and pledged to work with their supporters to adhere to the provided guidelines.
"We are sure, and party representatives also agree with us, that if these guidelines are adhered to, both of them will hold their rallies peacefully, and their supporters will also be able to attend without any hindrances whatsoever," said Grace Ansah Akrofi, the Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service.
The police have also urged the public to contact the dedicated election 2024 emergency hotline (0800311311) in case of any difficulties during the rallies.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure peace, security, and law and order throughout the general elections and beyond.
