Accra, Ghana - In a meeting with political party leaders and the media today in Accra, Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, commended the political parties for their conduct and cooperation during the ongoing election process.
Speaking on behalf of the National Emergency Task Force, Dr. Dampare thanked the parties for the "trust and confidence they continue to repose in us when it comes to matters of elections." He noted that the parties had demonstrated this trust by allowing security agencies to be present during their internal elections and by reporting any individuals claiming to be security personnel but not authorized.
The police chief also praised the political leaders, including presidential candidates, for their conduct during the campaign period, stating that the level of tension in Ghana is "nowhere near what we are experiencing as a people" compared to recent elections in other democracies.
"We can say, is a new dawn of politics in Ghana, and we are proud of you as politicians, and we are proud of you as Ghanaians," Dr. Dampare said.
However, the IGP also urged the parties and their supporters to be realistic about the election outcomes, noting that only 276 of the over 800 candidates will be victorious. He advised them to "plan also to celebrate your possible defeat" in order to ensure Ghana emerges as the ultimate winner.
Dr. Dampare reaffirmed the police's commitment to ensuring peace, security and the rule of law during the elections, stating that they will be "merciless" in applying the law where necessary. He called on all stakeholders to play their roles responsibly to deliver a free, fair and transparent process.
The meeting was part of the National Emergency Task Force's efforts to engage with political parties and the media ahead of the highly anticipated general elections scheduled for early December.
