Accra, Ghana - The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection ( MoGCSP) markes World Children's Day with a focus on the theme "Our Future, Our Voice: Listening to a Future for Affirmative Action."
The highlight of the celebrations was the 6th session of the National Children's Parliament, where young Ghanaians had the opportunity to voice their thoughts on their rights and the importance of gender equity. This platform underscored the government's dedication to amplifying the perspectives of the youth and ensuring their active participation in shaping policies that affect their lives.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere, the Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South and Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Employment and Social Welfare, praised the Affirmative Action Act for its potential to contribute significantly to the growth and prosperity of Ghanaian communities.
"The passage of this act signals a deliberate effort to correct historical imbalance and ensure that no one is left behind in our journey towards national progress," Anhwere said. "Inclusive Development is not just a moral imperative, it is an economic necessity."
Citing research that demonstrates the benefits of women's empowerment, Anhwere emphasized that actively involving women in decision-making processes and creating equitable participation pathways can foster a culture of innovation and collaboration that benefits the entire nation.
However, Anhwere stressed that the success of the Act requires collective action, vigilance, and shared responsibility to break down stereotypes and challenge discriminatory practices. He called on all Ghanaians to champion the cause of gender equity, not as a favor to women, but as an investment in humanity.
"Let us work toward a Ghana where equality is not an aspiration but a lived reality, with the Affirmative Action Act as our guiding framework," Anhwere said. "Together, we can build a nation that truly reflects the dignity, potential, and worth of all its people."
The event underscored Ghana's commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society, where the voices of the youth and the empowerment of women are central to the country's development agenda.
The Chief Director of MoGCSP Dr. Afisah Zakariah, expressed her gratitude to UNICEF and the World Bank, whose support has been instrumental in advancing the ministry’s objectives.
