The vice-presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has hit the ground running to canvas votes for the party in the forthcoming general elections in her home region.

During her tour at the Central Region today, August 7, 2024, the aspiring vice president of the Republic of Ghana visited the Ajumako Enyan Essiam Constituency to explain the policies and programs of the NDC to the people.

At a gathering in Breman Essiam, party functionaries across various levels joined party faithful to welcome her to the constituency. The paramount chief of the Breman Essiam Traditional Area, Odeefo Afankwa III, and her queen mother, Nana Esi Essiam Essiwaa II, graced the occasion as customs demand. Artisans, professional bodies, and other identifiable groups presented their pleas to the future NDC government, should they receive the nod on December 7.

In her address, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang stated that the NDC has put forth policies that can improve the lives of the people in this country, irrespective of their educational level.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang noted that women are mostly affected by the economic hardships in the country. As such, she emphasized that the NDC has women at heart and has proposed initiatives to better their lives, including the establishment of a Women's Development Bank. She stated that the bank will provide loans to women at minimal interest rates, empowering them economically to cater for their families.

Professor Naana asserted that not everyone can be intellectually apt; some may prefer to venture into artisanal training and may not benefit from free senior high school. Thus, the former vice chancellor stated that an NDC government will seek to make apprenticeship free if voted into power.

She added that the 24-hour economy, proposed by flagbearer John Mahama, will address the issue of unemployment in Ghana. She noted that this policy will create opportunities for people to engage in economic activities during the odd hours of the day when many have retired for the day.

Odeefo Afankwa III, the paramount chief of the Essiam Traditional Area, who received the professor and her team, advised politicians to pursue peace and desist from engaging in abusive behavior that can disturb the peace of the country.

Moreover, Odeefo pleaded with the vice presidential candidate of the NDC to consider Essiam in sharing the national cake. He stated that the community has initiated a TVET in Essiam, which requires support from the government.

Meanwhile, the queen mother of the Breman Essiam Traditional Area, Nana Essiwaa II, expressed delight in the proposal to establish a bank for women. She said this would ease the pressure on women in Ghana who bear the costs of the country's economic woes.

She noted that the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has done his best to bring development to the area and that the next NDC government should augment his efforts.

The NDC is set to lock horns with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in what many see as a crucial election in 2024. The NDC's flagbearer, John Mahama, is running again with the aim of completing his unexpired term.

Meanwhile, the NPP is determined to break the jinx in the Fourth Republic, aiming to win a third consecutive term this year.
