The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has celebrated the 45th anniversary of June 4th to commemorate the fallen heroes of the uprising that took place in 1979.
This year's edition was held at Enyan Denkyira in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District in the Central Region, where some NDC stalwarts and members gathered to pay homage to the founding fathers of the party.
The running mate for the 2024 election, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, among other national, regional and constituency executives were present to honor the ceremony, which aimed to commemorate the theme "Loyalty, Unity and Vigilance for Victory 2024". Other dignitaries included paramount chiefs from some traditional areas in the Central Region, Members of Parliament (MPs), former appointees, and some professional groups.
Addressing the gathering, the running mate of the NDC for the 2024 election, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, underscored the need for Ghanaians to understand the rationale that occasioned the overthrow of the government in 1979. She paid homage to the first president of the 4th Republic, the late Jerry John Rawlings, for assuming responsibility at that time, when the country was on its knees.
She charged Ghanaians to replicate the action taken by the late former president by voicing out the wrongdoings of the current government. She added that Ghanaians must vote out the NPP government and bring back the NDC to correct the wrongs that have occurred under this administration.
The National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, added that the ongoing ambulance trial against the Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Ato Forson, will rather make him stronger, not weaken him. He said the constituents should pray for Dr. Forson during these trying times so that he comes out stronger.
Additionally, Mr. Asiedu Nketia reiterated the need to make the celebration a national one, and that the NDC will never stop celebrating, irrespective of the challenges they face. He said the celebration is synonymous with a day of accountability and that Ghanaians should call on the people in leadership to give an account of their stewardship.
In a speech read by Kweku Ricket Hagan, the MP for Cape Coast South,on behalf of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the MP for Ajumako Enyan Essiam Constituency and Minority Leader in Parliament, urged Ghanaians to be concerned about some infractions seen under the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He explained that Ghana is beset with a government characterized by nepotism, corruption, impunity, and abuse of power, a situation he described as worrying.
Furthermore, the General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, extended an invitation to the New Patriotic Party to join in the celebration going forward. He said June 4th is not about any political party, but it is for the nation. He stated that elections in Ghana should be held between parties who have the nation's best interests at heart and not where only one party possesses that trait. He noted that his joy is to see political parties talk about who loves Ghana most during their electioneering campaigns, stating that only this can bring development to the country.
The MP for Klottey Korley Constituency, Dr. Zenator Rawlings, on her part, eulogized the bravery of the officers at the time. She said the celebration should remind Ghanaians to vote the NDC into power on December 7. She stated that the principles of the revolution in 1979 are still relevant today and that this relevance should propel Ghanaians to change the current government.
