President of the Licensed Surveyors Association of Ghana (LiSAG), Surv.Ing. Samuel Larbi Darko, has Said that Effective collaboration between geologists and surveyors in Ghana will help protect the environment in the country.
According to the president the effective collaboration will enable the authorities to confine prospectors to these designated areas of mining and minimize the environmental damage caused to our lands.
Ing. Darko made these known during a media briefing at the closing Ceremony of the 2024 FIG working week organized in Ghana by the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) in partnership with Licensed surveyors Association of Ghana (LiSAG) and Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS). He highlighted that Galamsey continues to pose a significant environmental threat in Ghana, despite the government's efforts to combat it.

He suggested that by working together, geologists and surveyors could effectively identify mineral-rich areas and establish clear boundaries to regulate mining activities.
"Galamsey is a serious problem for our country,And we have to find ways to manage it with the help of Surveyors"he quizzes.
Furthermore, Ing Darko revealed the importance of governmental involvement in meticulous urban planning to prevent the recurring issue of flooding in the Capital city and various regions of Ghana during the rainy seasons.
He proposed that the government should allocate sufficient resources to surveyors to finance the implementation of appropriate infrastructure in strategic locations.
Meanwhile, the President of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS),Sur. Ing. Dr. Anthony Arkoh-Adjei, has urged surveyors to uphold ethical standards. He said that, this approach is crucial for gaining the trust of the public and working collaboratively with them.

Dr. Arkoh-Adjei highlighted that the theme for the year underscores Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) commitment to fostering ethical conduct within the surveying profession and taking action against individuals who operate outside the boundaries of the law.
He mentioned that their members will receive a distinctive badge to distinguish them from non-professionals, following which the public will be advised to avoid engaging with unethical individuals.
The former president of Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) who also served as the Conference Director, Suv. Ing Suleman Mahama, on his part, expressed his optimism in surveyors from Ghana to apply the knowledge gained from the celebration of 2024 FIG working week to bring environmental sustainability in Ghana.
The FIG Working Week was held at the La Palm Royal Beach Resort,in Accra from Sunday May 19, to Thursday May 23 under the theme "Your World: Our World: Resilient Environment and Sustainable Resource Management for All". The next edition is expected to take place in Australia in 2025.
