The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has called for collaborative efforts to use modern technology to manage land and natural resources, saying the effort in using digital technology is invaluable.

He made this call in the opening address of the ongoing 2024 Working Week, organised by the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) in collaboration with the Licensed Surveyors Association of Ghana (LiSAG) and the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS).

The FIG Working Week, being held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel from Sunday, May 18 to Thursday, May 23, will honor the theme "Your World; Our World: Resilient Environment and Sustainable Resources Management for All."

President Akufo-Addo believes the theme for the celebration underscores the invaluable contributions of surveyors in sustaining resources and their management across the globe. He said the surveying profession has been a critical pillar in the development of Ghana's socioeconomic infrastructure, spanning from the colonial era through to this day.

Also, the President admitted that the world is faced with greater challenges in the realm of land administration and spatial planning. He attributed these challenges to environmental degradation, rapid urbanization, and the urgent need for sustainable resources management. He called on the participants to find solutions to these problems.

He charged the FIG, LiSAG, and GhIS to join forces to harness digital technology to address the challenges the world is facing in managing natural resources.

According to him, the technological tools used help to generate accurate data, enable efficient information processing, and facilitate faster decision-making on critical environmental issues to meet the fast pace of information flow today.

Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo called for more emphasis on education and continuous professional development as a means to ensure the future of surveying. He said the next generation of surveyors should be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to manage competitive modern land administration and environmental management.

Meanwhile, the President of International Federation of surveyors (FIG), Ing. Dr. Diane Dumashie, in her remarks, admonished the participants to form strong partnerships and connectivity with their governments. She said this is the sustainable way of working across all generations in the profession. She showered words of praise on the government of Ghana and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for the immense support given to the federation.

On his part, Surv. Ing. Dr. Anthony Arko Adjei, President Ghana Institution of Surveyors  (GhIS)  expressed his optimism that the event will place Ghanaian and African surveyors on the global pedestal to meet international standards of practice.

He asserted that illegal mining remains a devastating environmental issue, which has negatively affected the ecological system, resulting in deforestation, water pollution, and soil erosion. He asked participants to share their knowledge on how Ghana can use innovative solutions to curb this menace.
