President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo- Addo on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, commissioned the newly built Borteyman Sports Complex in the Greater Accra Region ahead of the 2023 All African Games.
The President on 31st August 2021 cut sod for the construction of the $145 million multipurpose facility to host the competition.
The venue will hold events in seven different sports, including triathlons, handball, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, and tennis.
The sports complex contains a 1,000-seater capacity swimming pool, comprising a 10-lane competition swimming pool and an eight-lane warm-up swimming pool, alongside a multipurpose Sports Hall capable of seating 1,000 spectators for various events such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.
There’s also a five-tennis court complex, with a 1,000-seat Center Court, and a 500-seat temporary dome for handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, fencing, and arm wrestling.
Speaking at an event to commission the facility on Tuesday, February 13, President Akufo-Addo urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports and do everything possible to make this edition the best in history.
“Fellow Ghanaians, as we enter the final stretch of preparations for the African games next month. The government of the African Union, the Association of National Teams of Africa and the Association of Africa’s Sports Confederation, We’ll do everything possible to welcome and ensure the best arrangements for planned events. I admonish the Minister of Youth & Sports, staff of the Ministry and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to go all out and organise the best African Game in history.”
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to guaranteeing the safety of all participating nations and visitors.
“I pledge the full commitment of government to ensure that all visitors in the country are secure. Enjoy the best hospitality Ghana has to offer and experience the greatest of African Games,” he said.
The games, which Ghana is hosting for the first time since 1965, is scheduled to start on March 8, 2024, and end on March 23, 2024.
