Bawku Senior High School (BAWSCO) launched their 60th-anniversary  at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra.

Bawku Senior High School was formally opened on October 11, 1963 with a student population of 50 under the leadership of the late Dr. Agyeman Dicksion and 3 teachers with the aim "To transform the school into an institution of disciplined students with a high level of academic performance to achieve the goals of education”.  It was also previously called Azoka Secondary School.  It was one of the Secondary Institutions established by the Ghana Education Trust.

The Headmaster of Bawku Senior High School (BAWSCO), Rev. Dr. Sylvester Agalga, has appealed to the government of Ghana, the various security agencies, and the natives of Bawku land to immediately put an end to the ongoing conflict, which has negatively impacted education in the area.

According to him, the educational situation in the area would have improved if there had been no conflict because many teachers from down south refuse to transfer to the area, while a few others who do end up running away after a few months of stay.

Giving the situational report of the school, Rev. Dr. Agalga said since 2018, when he took over as the headmaster of the school, 19 teaching staff members have gotten themselves transferred from the school, a situation he attributed to the ongoing conflict in the community.

“As we speak Bawku SHS lacks teachers in subjects such as integrated science, social studies and English language because many teachers who are posted to the school deny posting or get themselves transferred for fear of been entangled in the conflict,” he stated.

The headmaster emphasized that, because of the choked toilet, the female students at the school have been practicing open defecation, a situation he said does not speak well of a 60-year-old school and therefore called on all old students to come on board to save the situation.

On academics, the headmaster was happy to announce that BAWSCO, which had a pass rate of 3% in 2018, rose to 74.5% in 2021, winning both regional and national awards and trophies.

The chairperson of the occasion and Dean of the School of Languages at the University of Ghana who also doubles as an old student, Prof. Helen Yitah, said BAWSCO is a place where all the accomplished individuals gathered in this room today began some years ago and that makes her proud.

“I am happy to stir the affairs of this occasion and also very delighted to be at this event today to witness such a milestone in our lives today,” he said

Speaking on the theme; ‘Promoting Moral and Academic Excellence in the Midst of the Challenges of the 21st Century; the Role of Stakeholders,’ the Global President of Bosa, Alhaji Abdullah Otito said the moral fiber of the youth these days is nothing to right home about and therefore charged the members to find time and visit the school to speak to the young ones on the area of morals and academic performance.

The Board Chairman of Bawku Old Students Association (BOSA) for Accra and Tema, Prof. Ramatu Mahama Alhassan charged all members to take part in all the various activities lined up for the 60th anniversary celebration.
