Don't Bribe our workers – MD to ECG Customers

Reported by, Nsor Paul mensah.

The Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr Samuel Dubik Mahama has appealed to Ghanaians to avoid bribing taskforce deployed nationwide to audit meters.

“They are not to take any money or whatsoever from any customer because if you are doing the right thing, you don’t have to compromise anybody with money,” he cautioned.

Mr Mahama made these statements during the launch of the visibility taskforce at the Accra East Region at Legon.

He said a similar exercise will be launched nationwide in all areas that the company operates and is aimed at checking the integrity of the meter, getting access to meters to know whether they are performing well, whether they need to be replaced or technically check the health status of the meter.

“I know there is a temptation out there but you have to be truthful to yourself because some of you are on contract and for you to be permanent staff means we need money to employ you.” He told the Taskforce

“Look, let’s be fair and honest to ourselves because a lot is going on out there that we need to find out and is not that we don’t know, we know that people have by-pass the meter, some are using power without paying while others have decided to pay a small amount of money because they have tempered with the meter,” he lamented.

He said when the company finds any illegality, the customer is notified to report to the various district and regional offices within 48 hours and the offenders are arrested if they fail to report within the stipulated time.

The managing Director said anybody who self-reconnects without ECG’s knowledge will be charged for stealing and punished by the law.

“We are aware that some criminal elements will try to use the exercise to get to people’s homes so use all the available means to identify yourself as workers of ECG and be polite in your doing,” he said.
